How Auto-Dimming Rearview Mirrors Work
Auto-dimming rearview mirrors function by detecting and reacting to the light radiating from the headlights of vehicles behind them. These mirrors feature an optical coating that can absorb visible light and reflect infrared light, which the human eye cannot see. The absorbed energy creates electrical charges in the glass, which are then transmitted to sensors at the corners of the mirror. After processing by an integrated circuit and amplification, the signals are transmitted down two wires to an LCD screen within the mirror housing.
